CLOTHING
DO
- Always read the care label and washing instructions before washing your clothes.
- Organise your laundry into groups with similar wash care instructions
DON’T
- Use too much detergent
- Do not use fabric detergents that contain bleach.
- Do not tumble dry garment unless indicated on the care label.
- Do not iron prints, trims or embellishments.
- Do not leave garments with white and contrast coloured panels soaking for prolonged periods.
FOOTWEAR
DO
- Invest in some shoe trees – they allow your recently worn shoes to contract and dry out to their ideal shape. You don’t need a set for each pair of shoes – the vital time for use is an hour or two after you’ve removed the shoes.
- Invest as much care in choosing a cobbler to resole or reheel your shoes as you did in purchasing them.
- Polish your shoes – the little time you spend cleaning and polishing will be repaid by the extended life of your shoes
DON’T
- Put wet shoes near direct heat or a radiator – they may dry too quickly and cause the leather to crack. Instead push newspaper into the shoe and let it dry naturally.
- Leave salt stains (from road gritting) on your shoes. Instead apply, very sparingly a little vinegar and water.
SUITS
DO
- Use a wooden or wishbone shaped plastic hanger after wear – this will help keep the shape of the suit.
- Invest in a good clothes brush and give your suit a brush after wear. This stops dirt settling into the fabric of the suit which will mean less dry cleaning and a longer lasting suit.
- Use a suit carrier for transporting suits but while kept in a wardrobe, only use a cloth suit cover. This allows more air to circulate.
DON’T
- Wear the same suit day after day – a suit needs 24 hours to air and breathe
- Put the suit back in the closet straight after wear. Hang it in a well -ventilated area so any moisture in the wool dissipates and the fibres spring back into shape.
